Cette chanson de la musique folk américaine a une origine indéterminée.
Il a souvent été dit à tort que sa source serait un chant composé en 1896 par Katharine E. Purvis (paroles) et James Milton Black (musique) sous le titre «When The Saints Are Marching In».

L'utilisation traditionnelle de cet hymne gospel est une marche funéraire (ou «jazz funerals») jouée à la Nouvelle-Orléans (Louisiane) par des musiciens qui accompagnent un cercueil à travers le quartier, et jusqu'au cimetière. Le rythme est alors celui d'un chant funèbre : lent et triste.

A l'issue de la cérémonie d'inhumation, le groupe s'éloigne de la tombe sans jouer. Une fois qu'une distance respectueuse est atteinte, la trompette lead sonne un "riff" d'annonce pour alerter ses collègues musiciens. A ce moment-là, le rythme change et le groupe se débarasse alors de sa solennité en faveur de l'animation avec une musique joyeuse dite "hot" ou "Dixieland", c'est-à-dire plus optimiste. La famille, les amis et autres célébrants peuvent s'unir spontanément derrière le groupe dans ce qui porte le nom de «second line» (deuxième ligne), souvent en brandissant des parapluies ou des cannes tout en dansant dans la célébration, pour exprimer la joie de rentrer à la maison et se restaurer, "quand le nouveau monde est révélé" : ils expriment leur souhait de voir le défunt se joindre aux Saints pour franchir les Portes du Paradis.
